I see many discussions on the net about how bad is the new Star Trek Discovery. It is the setting for many heated discussions, flamewars, trolling. But why is it important to address this?
It is because it represents a global shift to a new world we all live in and its charateristics are expressed in movies. That's the real "battle" , and not why STD is bad, or TNG is good. Before digging more into this fringe topic, lets establish a few "rules" first:
Everyone is allowed to like whatever the f*** he/she wants.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions.
Everyone can criticize (with real arguments or by trolling) anything.
Ok lets move on.
Star Trek universe is not the Holy Bible, we don't disagree over dogmatic issues for a thousand years.
I think some people confuse "fan" with "fanboy", so they don't understand how people can hate e.g STD for introducing weird science and focusing on continuous personal dramas and dystopian settings.
That being said, many fans do not get that for a franchise to be successful (and I mean financially) has to follow trends. And current trends are esoteric self-centered dramas the character must survive, coupled with explosive special effects , less time to think - more time to absorb, personal success stories (heroic usually), gray characters, faith etc.
These trends are a huge shift from earlier decades where other stuff mattered more. For example scientific progress (logic), collective efforts, futurism (romanticized view of the future), character progress through trial and error, gray status quo instead of grey characters, exploration of the unknown.
The reason is that the world has shifted from an era of cold war where the pending global doom of a new world war was clear, but with a definitive status quo, a dipole good vs bad, continuous progress in a somewhat steady form, to an era of uncertain future, global warming, religious fanaticism, pandemics, global internet etc.
But the main shift I think is we went from a world where we needed collective effort to build a better future, to a world where we live in dystopian societies and every man is for themselves to survive and to succeed at all costs.
Capitalism won the cold war and its chief quality inspired in people is individualism after all. But because one cannot master all, we need to have faith for everything we can't control or is out of our reach.
And faith coupled with individualism is a good recipe for dogmas, fanaticism, esoteric truths (the thought that "my" truth is equal to "yours" and that is the philosophical end we can reach in an argument) and not for ...science and logic for example. The sad truth is that we no longer live in a world where we hope for better things to come through collective means. And that is reflected in the movies ofcourse.
So...welcome the future! But sadly not the TOS or TNG one.
